Spoilers about Beryl and Seles:
(many thanks to Hana-chan
and MastressAlita
for providing the information! My deepest gratitude *bows*)
Seles was one of the highest ranked angels (proven by his six wings) in Heaven, so close that he even gets to be near God. Thus, when Seles said that he saw God before, it wasn't a lie. He loved God and wished that God only had him in his eyes. Unfortunately, He loved everyone in Heaven equally and therefore couldn't return Seles' feelings for him. Raged from this, Seles killed God by taking the "Stone of God", which has power of immortality, from him. Fearing that Seles would obtain too much power and become a threat to Heaven, the Archangels casted him down to Naraku. Like all angels, once passed through the "net" between Heaven and Hell/Naraku, they cannot return anymore to Heaven.
After Seles fell, he met a young boy named Beryl, whose wish was to save the world of demons from the Aprasas race (refer to Plum's history for more info). Seles granted him that wish. By sharing with Beryl the power of the "Stone of God", Beryl also became immortal just like Seles himself, and thus he was able to destroy most of the Aprasas race in Naraku. Although, few Aprasas did survive. But technically, the "King of Naraku" is really Beryl himself.
Beryl was the one that "created" the two princes, in the command of Seles, because Seles' angel body was eventually going to grow too weak for him. But despite the fact that Seles led him thinking he would transform Naraku into a paradise, Beryl soon became cautious of Seles' real intention: to destroy Naraku and then create a world of "Heaven" of his own. This led to Beryl's betrayal into teaming with the Elemental Aprasas in order to seal up Seles before he could destroy Naraku, the home he tried to protect from the beginning. Then Beryl created a "dummy" or a replacement of the Naraku King's position in order to wander and travel around Naraku.
In the process though, the princes have already started to develop, and they were bound to wake up. The princes are to become strong enough to be able to battle the Elemental Aprasas Seals, the seals that sealed up Seles. That was the intension without making it obvious, and Sapphirus and Jade were supposed to guide them. I do not think Beryl was aware of Jade and Sapphirus' intentions, although suspicious, but only to that limit. (Note: Again, I may error here) Seles did after all project his hologram image to Jade and Sapphirus secretively.
We hear during flashbacks and dreams that Seles does beat Beryl when he disobeys, but Seles does cares a lot for Beryl too. Despite words of this caring were never said, the implications ARE present. Even at the end of the game, whether you are Alex or Platina, Seles takes out the stone from himself to give to Alex or Platina, since Beryl choose to follow them, so that they can accompany Beryl and he won't be alone. "Consuming" the stone's power will make either of them immortal.
