Spoilers about Ruby and Carrol:

[major thanks to the translations of Ruby and Carrol's background and bonfire scene Eruantale wrote!!]
Note: This contains spoilers for Happiness Cage: Forget Words [and major thanks to Hana-chan for the extensive summary!]
--this is just brief compilation of everything--

Background:
Both Ruby and Carrol grew up together in the same neighborhood, and Carrol lives with the secret that he is half-angel and has an angel mother. Ruby did not acknowledge that he had a younger brother (but I think he did know about his father and Carrol's mother), and they did not even meet each other in their childhood. But Carrol grew up knowing that Ruby was his older brother while Ruby did not even know he existed. His mother told him not to hate his father because he had given her hope and happiness. But their father was not even present when Carrol's mother was dying. For that Carrol's hatred for Ruby and his family in whole deepened. And it was not clear where their father went; he could have ran away, or he could have died.

Carrol's anger remained hidden, but he was planning ahead on giving a pain to Ruby equal to his own. In Happiness Cage, he approached Ruby, who was working at a pub for part-time with a girl named Rita. (And also as a thief with his gang) Despite Naraku's rule of the strongest surviving while the weak parish, Ruby helps everyone, almost to the point that he questioned himself why: was there such thing as helping out due to compassion in Naraku? But he likes making others happy. So when Carrol showed up outside wounded, he offered to take Carrol in and take care of him. Ruby did not know Carrol was actually his half-brother, but Carrol knew it all along and all this was just an act.

After the tragedy with Rita, Ruby questioned about himself again. Being well brought up without much suffering, which was different from other children of Naraku, everyone was kind to him and his actions were based upon other's opinions for him. He felt lost of his true intentions for his actions. But Carrol offered him comfort, and Ruby offered Carrol to join his gang and work together.

They became partners; Ruby's reputation, which was already very rampant, became better because Carrol had always done his duties. Ruby took care of Carrol and treated him very well, and superfluously Carrol compliments Ruby. Ruby told him that he didn't want to be just "boss" to Carrol, but he wanted the both of them to be equal, which Carrol found to be problematic in other people's eyes. Ruby even told him to stop calling him "boss" and call him "Ruby".

But one day, Carrol's anger unleashed and slashed Ruby on the chest, giving him a deep wound. Ruby questioned why because he thought they were good friends. Carrol explained that Ruby did not even know of his own existance, how they share a common blood but that he possessed another half of the "forbidden" blood. When he called Ruby "Ani-Ue", Ruby understood and was shocked. Carrol also said how he had always been jealous Ruby, how he got a normal childhood and the happiness Carrol would never get.

Reunion: [bonfire scene in Ch.4]
In the reunion, the Ruby and Carrol discussed about their parents and what they have gone through ever since the scar. They realized that they both were very alike, that deep inside, they were envious of one another. According to Ruby, Carrol resembles their demon dad much more than Ruby did, such as Carrol's hair color. Carrol also got to bury his mother (and father? not sure), but the last time Ruby saw his demon mother was when he was young, when his family fell apart. Ruby also said he'd never get their father's status because of what he became now.

Carrol emphasize on his identity crisis and his "hatred" for his mother, how it would've been better off if she was a normal angel and hated demons. And it was what built up his confusion and hate for what he is now. While he was brought up hating angels, the angel blood runs in his blood, so he becomes reserved about the world. Then they both agreed that their vengeance brought nothing but more wounds to themselves, and serving their princes and the future of Naraku became more of importance than taking revenge.

Ruby tells Carrol to deliver his own idea of a "perfect world" to his prince, but Carrol was keep being so reserved and putting himself down. Ruby told him that he had to smile more and demonstrated a "big smile" to Carrol, but Carrol denies that it is against his character. After receiving some taunting, Carrol eventually said he'd try, and in the process, he called Ruby "onii-chan". Ruby told him that he takes it back and told Carrol to stop smiling, but Carrol refused to and continued to call him "onii-chan" ^_^
